The New York Times

Movie critics are in disbelief. Despite harsh reviews,”Mamma Mia!” is the  the third highest grossing movie musical of all time. This should come as no surprise considering the dynamic cast and the spirited song and dance sequences. Meryl Streep’s youth and spunk light up the set. Paired with Amanda Seyfried, the two “take it all” or save the movie for that matter. They explode into song, dance the days away, and transition light-heartedly from one scene to the next. The relationships between the women and girls hysterically enlighten the mood and keep everything upbeat and euphoric.

Unfortunately, the reviews ripped the cast of “Mamma Mia!” into shreds. There must have been “something in the air that night.” It is always a risk to produce a movie musical, and everyone had high expectations. The New York Times movie review by A. O. Scott, harps on the fact that it is “clumsy,” “shoddy,” and contains “mismatched shots.”

If I were the publicist, I would use these critiques to my advantage by promoting the movie as goofy, laid back, and oozing with entertainment. Despite the film missing what the critics were looking for, it is a feel-good,  high-spirited flick that brings joy and laughter. I think promoting the “silliness” of the prestigious actors, Pierce Brosnan and Meryl Streep, would prevent the heavy bashing from the critics. If they had expected the movie to be a wild, exciting, and juvenile movie, then the ratings would have boomed.

To make this movie a more successful hit, I would have emphasized the way the fantastic cast clowned around together, creating laughter and cheer. I would highlight the fact that these actors have never participated in a movie like this musical. This movie forces you to forget problems and stress because you cannot stop giggling at the poor singing performance by Pierce Brosnan  or the sixty-year-old Meryl Streep jumping around in overalls. Go treat yourslef to this exceptional musical and you’ll be “having the time of your life!”
